316 - Community Call
Black Rock LOST Podcast: Season 5 Episode 7 of ABC's TV show, LOST entitled 316. Our mix of Lost Podcasters and fans provide some early observations and analysis just after the show airs each week. We revisit the Narnia references along with some Slaughterhouse 5 analogies. Is it Déjà vu or are the 'mirror images' our own Nancy Drew from Lostaholics like to find really permeating this episode? And just which bit is the part that was 'cool' to see out-of-order that Damon & Carlton alluded too?

Reincarnation
You were talking about that last night and the idea that maybe the flight and crash of 815 has been happening over and over again. I thought about that and I have come up with a lot of interesting tid bits for Nancy Drew to chew on, since she has been working her mirror image theory. Rousseau's party had 6 (I believe), same as Oceanic 6. Rousseau was pregnant, Claire was pregnant, and you remember my theory that now Kate is filling that role. Montand played the violin (according to Darlton), Charlie, and now Hurley is carrying a guitar case. Kate had killed 3 men, Sayid had killed 3 men. Kate was a prisoner, Sayid is a prisoner, and there were bodies in chains on the Black Rock. Someone suggested that Locke's corpse was a proxy for Christian's corpse. We know from the blast door map that the site of the "final resting place of Magnus Hanso" was around the Black Rock. Why did they point that out, as if he were the only officially dead sailor? Maybe he was already dead before they were marooned on the island? Maybe Christain was his proxy. And as for the question of the missing Aaron and Ji Yeon... I kept telling my husband that they would fill the roles of Zack and Emma, but they never showed up. I can see why now. If they are coming, they'll have to get there another way than 316. As far as we know Zach and Emma were traveling alone. There mother was waiting for them in L.A.
I agree stefanymac. Don't forget Yemmi. He may have been another dead proxy. The cyclical nature of the show is really starting to step to the forefront.
I don't think I'd say the crash is happening over & over, but there may be some circular thing going on.
I am starting to wonder if we can avert the valenzeti equation by trapping people or things in a time loop (though maybe not not quite as literaly as the compass. But what if by taking the O6 out of the equation we avoid the problem. And perhaps not the same person each time but their 'reincarnations' since the universe will course correct and just go on to the next instance of that soul (Ok, I'm reaching, but hey, it's LOST).
I am starting to see my loyalty to this program paying off. Everything is going in circles...

Hey Curt, you mentioned in this podcast (and I think an earlier one also), about Lost not having "narrative". I must not be familiar with how you're using that term - I take it to essentially mean "story". If there's anything Lost doesn't lack, I think it would be that - different levels of story nested atop one another, episode-long, season-long, series-long. I feel like I'm missing something.

Blake, I can't answer for Curt, but to me, saying this season doesn't have a narrative makes sense because we aren't seeing the "centric" episodes. In the past, having a central character with either a flash back or forward kind of gave us the narrator to what would be happening on the island, whether with emotions, physical happenings, or relationships. I agree that this season is lacking the narrative aspect, but I would almost catagorize it as a 'chronicle' now. Plus, it would go along with the Narnia theme.
Blake - On one hand, you are clearly right, obviously we've been watching a 'story'. But I'd challenge you to tell me just what that story is! One of EW's video blog on LOST summed up the first four seasons in two sentences... ok, maybe it was three. I'll try and find it and play it in our show. Scarily, while they left out lots of 'parts', it would be hard to say they were wrong. And that is just it, imo, we have lots of parts, but they haven't been stitched together into a narrative.
More Proxies for Nancy Drew
I can't believe I forgot about Ben as a stand in for Hurley. Ben came panting on board almost missing the flight. One more proxy I came across while listening to another podcast: On 316 Sun is a proxy for Rose. Sun sits on the plane worring about her absent husband while fiddling with his wedding ring. And though this is not on the subject of the proxy aspect, I wanted to make sure I passed this along before your next show. I haven't heard it discussed on the Black Rock so I wanted to make sure you knew. When Rousseau's party came on shore we hear the numbers playing on their radio. Several podcasts have isolated the audio and played it for the audience. It's Hurley!!! Jay and Jack, and Wayne's take on Lost played pretty clear tracks. They have me convinced. Wrap your brain around that. Hurley is the reason that Hurley became cursed by the numbers. That is one more of these paradox issues that the writers claim to be so against.

I am just now listening to the cast, not sure if you guys talked about this, but what about the whole mysticism thing around Hawkins, the necessity of all of the 6 being present there at that time (or was she referring to the flight?), and then when they get to the church it's just a Dharma station, there's no mysticism or necessity for all of them to be present.
What do you guys think about that?

Marcelo - To be honest I'm having a hard time getting my head around of this right now. Te whole Ms Hawking role and her relationship to characters has me baffled for the moment. I feel like I'm missing something to get unstuck right now.
I will say that the mysticism around her also seems to be an intersection of Science and Faith. So not only are those lines being blurred but so are others.
I need to sit in a sweat lodge and meditate on this a little longer!

I do appreciate the mystery in the writing, but it seemed of no importance the fact that there were only two of the Oceanic 6 in the church and nothing really happened. Ben was almost crying to her when he said, "what if I can't get them all to come"...
I may be misunderstanding, but too me it felt they were all talking about getting them to the station, not necessarily to the plane.
Maybe I just misunderstood.
Something else entirely...
Were the writers trying to tell us something by having the picture of the Island with the Army surveillance info on it...
Could the Dharma initiative be a government thing, like an undercover project?
