hey guys, great podcast as usual

I initially had the same reaction as you guys concerning Ben and his father leaving the island, and assuming the ALT timeline started being different after the incident occurred.

But there are a couple of problems with this: Ben's dad would remember his son being shot even if Ben couldn't. I highly doubt that Roger would have regretted leaving the island if his son was shot.

Also, there was Roger's line about the Dharma Initiative being "good people". Remember when he talks to Kate in Season 5, he calls the DI a bunch of idiots. His perception of Dharma is completely different, and this was all before the incident.

To me, this pretty much confirms that the changes in the ALT go back before the Incident in 1977.

I think that's an excellent point to bring up, Aaron. I hadn't even considered Roger's attitude pre-incident when factoring all of this in.

This is where the spiral of thoughts concerning timelines are going to give me an extreme headache! Before, when we've discussed time travel, we've stated that things that have happened in the past have always happened in the past, including factoring in that Sayid, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Juliet, Miles, Hurley, and Jin all traveled back to the 70's. However, in the alt. timeline, we clearly see that Oceanic 815 lands safely in LA and no one in 2004 has any island contact. If that's the case, then in this alt. timeline, Ben COULDN'T have been shot by Sayid. Sayid has never even set foot on the island.

Now, in order to converge the two story lines, we've explored the possibility of another catastrophic event happening to "blast" the timelines back together, but when considering what Dr. Chang said when a version of the very same bunny he was holding appeared behind him. He acted as if the two meeting would ........ok, so I don't remember exactly, but it was similar to what Dr. Brown says in Back to the Future about ending the world as we know it.

That's kind of an interesting phrase, though, isn't it? "The World As We Know It".....it doesn't mean the whole world is going to blow up, it just means that the faces, personalities, and politics of the society we live in would be completely different--maybe even be the mirror opposite of what it is now.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I love the catch that Roger's attitude was opposite that of his behavior in 1977, especially his treatment of Ben, but I think it has everything to do with the fact that Ben HADN'T been shot, and the occupants of the island had been evacuated because of the instability of the Swan station--or what we would consider to be the incident without the interference of the jughead. And because he and Ben left the island, unscathed, he probably viewed the DI as good people since they saved his life and the life of his son.

Something else to add:

Because this alternate timeline does seem to imply that our Losties wouldn't have been a part of the series of events leading up to the incident, it would also mean that Daniel Faraday wouldn't have been there to urge Richard and The Others to encase the Jughead in cement. It's possible that Richard's group left the Jughead just where it sat--resulting in the need for radiation suits when walking throughout the island--and then the instability of the Swan energy could have detonated it as it sat above ground. It could actually be a feasible explanation for why the island is under water. A blast from below ground and a blast from above ground may have been enough to crumble the island.

I didn't he regreted 'leaving' he regreted going.

Curt said...

OMG... what I meant to say was...

I don't think he 'regreted' leaving but 'going'.

Still, your point is valid.

Aaron W said...

Nancy, I understand what you're saying about Sayid never shooting Ben if Oceanic 815 never crashed, and I agree with that part. Curt, I can see your point as well. It's presumably been many years since the Linuses left and maybe there's some nostalgia there for the simple life of drinking Dharma beer and shooting some hostiles.

It's really difficult because right now we still don't have enough info about the ALT to make any conclusions.

That being said, I still have a hard time believing Roger would have said something that nice about the DI. Remember that he is pissed from day 1 when they hand him the Work Man uniform. The options as I see them are:

1.The DI was a different organization than we have seen (i.e. the ALT timeline differs from further back than 1977)

2. Roger and Ben left the island due to a Swan/Jughead related evacuation that has nothing to do with the Losties (possibly explains Roger's comment about the DI, the DI saves their lives from the DI)

3. Roger and Ben left the island for some other reason (doesn't really explain Roger's comment)

One other small comment... we can't be completely sure that Ben's mother died in childbirth in the ALT either. At least there wasn't a line in the episode that confirmed she died at the same time.

Nancy Drew said...

Very true in regards to Ben's mother. It's almost as if we're going to see the "mother" issues now in this mirrored timeline.

Hey Guys,

I told you so! Wildcard theory came true, it was Widmore that was coming to the Island :)

I just don't see how can they end the parallel timeline now, after this episode! I think parallel timeline is going to stay for good, and will be the ending for the show, while the island timeline with slowly disappear. I hope they don't do that, but I just don't see how can they unite the two timelines without losing all the good things in parallel timeline...

I loved the scene with Ben putting down the rifle; a juxtaposition of Kate, who picked one up while leaving the temple. Although these two are both arguably on the wrong side, it appears as if they are falling in line.

Lost Lindsey is back to her shrill self I see. Too bad, switching off the podcast...

Your face is shrill. :) Glad to hear you're leaving, then.

Anyway, Alana points out that there are six candidates left. Who do you all think are the remaining six? Does it seem a coincidence that the 'six remaining' might also happen to be the 'Oceanic six?' If it's more than a coincidence, could the missing name also include Aaron?

Nancy Drew said...

It's so disappointing to me that people feel the need to leave comments saying that they're never listening again or deleting the download because of something we've said or someone on our show. For the record, if you really feel that way, then please feel free to make any actions you find necessary and do them QUIETLY! I, for one, LOVE having Lindsey as part of the team. It's a big job to keep the other two guys in line and she does it beautifully :)

As far as the "six"......I would almost assume that Aaron is one of the six and that Littleton would mean him and not Claire, but he's not exactly a Littleton, is he? Wouldn't he be whatever Thomas' last name is?

warningtrax said...

I don't quite understand Alana's statement that there are six candidate when you consider her uncertainty about which Kwon, "or is it both?"

Should her answer been more like, "Dunno. Five or Six." Or even six or seven?

I heard a quote that has been my mantra since early on with this show back when I was wondering how to make it more 'popular'. Of course, I gave up that effort and here's why:

I don't know the secret to success but I do know a sure fire plan for failure, trying to please everyone.

Mairuzu said...

Naw, I think our 'shrill' troll simply had the darkness take over, is all. :)

Also.. how does Joop the orangutan and the cure to the sickness (tested on Yemmie's town) fit into all this? Did Jacob improperly touch an orangutan? Was the sickness really a plot to darken mens' souls? Did Princess Diana really die in the space shuttle disaster?

Lost Lindsey said...

I am not shrill!

As for the theorys...Nancy Drew you do have to remember that Aaron has many identities...he could be a Littelton, but hes also an Austen, since Kate raised him, hes also however a Shephard and as you said what ever Thomas's last name is. Couldnt find it. I would hope that Aaron would be a part of the end in some way. His destiny and future has been hinted at so many times. Also...where the heck is Desmond and Sawyer??? We havnt seen either of them in so long...Desmond since last season!

Dogen the Buoy said...

Not interested in any criticism eh? Just want to live in your own insular little world? That's fine; it makes the decision to go a lot easier.

And Mairuzu, why don't you turn the mirror onto yourself and see who is acting like a troll. Nice job whiffing on the definition of shrill, too. Your insignificant contributions certainly won't be missed.

I feel honored to have been given the chance to use the ultimate of ankh jokes.......

Dogen the Buoy......Ankh off!

Lost Lindsey said...

Dogen, if you insist on criticizing then use contructive criticisim, we cant improve if you cant tell us what you think we are doing wrong, just dont fling insults....as nancy drew said, if you cant say something logical instead of just insulting us, people you barely know, then ankh off!

arturo said...

now now, don't start a big fight here, or else I will call Tom to take care of you, Dogen!

So true JayJay, it is a pattern of virtually any and every large internet group forum type thing I've been involved in. Which is why the only sane response is no response at all. The only winning move is not to play.
